Motorcycle exhaust: mufflers, headers and accessories for café racers, scramblers, trails and customs

There is probably no modification that transforms a motorcycle's character more radically than replacing the exhaust. Even before touching the handlebars or the seat, the sound of the machine becomes your own: rounder, rawer, more incisive depending on the volume and material of the muffler, the geometry of the header, the presence or absence of the catalytic converter. And visually, a well-chosen exhaust line completely redistributes the motorcycle's mass, lightening the rear end, clearing the engine, giving the silhouette a lightness and coherence that the original system, often massive and wrapped in heat shields, cannot offer.

At Blackpines, our exhaust catalog is designed for a wide range of motorcycles and riders: from custom café racer and scrambler preparations to trail and adventure bikes, Yamaha Ténéré 700, Honda Africa Twin, BMW F 850 GS, Ducati Desert X, Harley-Davidson Pan America, as well as modern classics like Triumph, Royal Enfield and Moto Guzzi. Universal and dedicated mufflers, stainless steel headers, full exhaust systems, exhaust wrap, baffles and heat shields make up all the components needed to work on the exhaust line from end to end.

Motorcycle mufflers: the acoustic and visual heart of the exhaust

The muffleris the part that attracts both eyes and ears. Its shape, cylindrical, conical, megaphone, oval, hexagonal, immediately defines the stylistic register of the build. Its length, outlet diameter and position on the motorcycle (low mount, high mount or "upswept", under-engine outlet, high side outlet) influence the visual balance of the machine as much as its acoustic performance. Its material, finally, determines its weight, its thermal behavior and its durability over time.

Stainless steel is the reference material for the vast majority of aftermarket mufflers. Corrosion-resistant, it easily withstands the temperature increases of exhaust gases and the repeated heating/cooling cycles inherent in motorcycle use. Its finish can be polished, brushed satin, black ceramic coated or high-temperature painted depending on the model.

Stainless steel represents the best compromise between price, durability and ease of maintenance for daily road use or long-distance travel. Titanium is the high-end material par excellence: 40 to 60% lighter than stainless steel with equivalent resistance, it develops a characteristic golden or iridescent coloration in operation that premium custom and trail enthusiasts particularly appreciate. Its price is significantly higher than stainless steel, but the weight saving and aesthetics fully justify the investment on dedicated budget projects. Carbon fiber is used for end caps and outlet covers on some high-end models, particularly in a competition or track-oriented context.

In terms of shape, mufflers for café racers and scramblers come in several families. The "megaphone" or "trumpet" type, which flares out towards the outlet, is one of the most iconic in 1960s-1970s café racer culture: its characteristic sound volume and generous silhouette make it a strong choice for builds with a strong vintage identity. The more discreet straight cylindrical type integrates better with the clean lines of minimalist builds.

The short "shorty" type mounts high on the rear frame in an "upswept" position that completely clears the rear wheel, a very popular position on scramblers, trackers and adventure trails that also want to increase ground clearance. Oval or hexagonal section mufflers bring a touch of modernity and reduced lateral bulk, useful on motorcycles where space around the rear wheel or panniers is limited.

Exhaust headers: optimizing gas flow at the source

The exhaust headercollects combustion gases from the cylinder outlets and channels them to the muffler. On most modern motorcycles, the original header is made of ordinary steel protected by an unappealing thermal paint or black coating. Replacing it with a polished stainless steel or titanium header is one of the modifications that most enhances the engine visually, especially on motorcycles with exposed engines where the header is fully visible, whether it's a Triumph vertical twin, a BMW flat-twin or a Ténéré single-cylinder. A well-machined brushed stainless steel header, with regular and clean TIG welds, immediately gives the whole a meticulous handcrafted dimension that completely changes the perception of the chassis.

Technically, an improved aftermarket header optimizes gas flow thanks to better calculated internal diameters and larger radius bends. This optimization reduces pressure losses and promotes the scavenging effect, a phenomenon by which gases moving in the header help evacuate the last burnt gases from the cylinder before the valve closes. The result is better filling and a livelier engine response, especially at high revs. On multi-cylinder motorcycles, the length and symmetry of the branches also influence torque distribution across the rev range.

Complete exhaust systems: total transformation

A complete exhaust systemreplaces the entire original system, from the cylinder head gasket to the muffler outlet. This is the most radical and coherent modification: by choosing a system where the header and muffler are developed together, you ensure perfect harmonization of sections, curves and materials, and a unified aesthetic from the engine flange to the outlet. The weight saving of an aftermarket full system over original painted steel lines is often significant, several kilograms less on the rear end, a noticeable benefit both for the motorcycle's dynamics and for fatigue during long-distance travel.

For trail and adventure bikes, a well-chosen complete system also improves ground clearance by repositioning the muffler higher or closer to the motorcycle's axis. On a Ténéré 700 or an Africa Twin used off-road, a high muffler with a high exit protects better against rocks and stumps than the low and exposed original system. For the most popular custom motorcycles, Triumph Bonneville T100 and T120, Street Twin, Scrambler 1200, Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, Continental GT 650, Harley-Davidson Sportster, Moto Guzzi V7 and V9, Ducati Scrambler, dedicated complete systems allow direct mounting on the original mounting points.

At Blackpines, we offer Zard products for the main motorcycles in our universe.  Zard, an Italian brand based in Bergamo, is one of the most respected references in the sector for the quality of its TIG welds, the precision of its fittings and the richness of its catalog.

Exhaust wraps: racing aesthetics and heat management

The exhaust wrapis the most immediately recognizable exhaust accessory for racing-minded builds. Wrapped tightly around the header pipes, it retains heat inside the tubes and accelerates the flow rate of exhaust gases. The thermal benefit is real: less radiated heat to the outside means better controlled temperature under the fairing, which protects adjacent plastic parts, hoses and wiring, a particularly important point on fully faired trail and adventure bikes whose electronic components are close to the exhaust line.

Exhaust wrap is available in natural basalt fiber (beige tint) or fiberglass (white or golden tint), in widths from 25 to 50 mm depending on the pipes to be covered. It is applied dry or slightly moistened to facilitate wrapping. The ends are held in place by stainless steel clamps supplied in the kit. The first start-up after installation produces temporary smoke and a characteristic odor as the wrap thermally stabilizes, which is perfectly normal and safe.

Baffles and DB killers: modulating your exhaust sound

The baffle, also known as a DB killer or sound reducer, is an internal deflector that is screwed into the muffler outlet to reduce its sound level. It allows you to switch between an open sound for country rides or track days, and a more muffled sound for daily urban use or routes through residential areas.

This is a very practical solution for aftermarket mufflers whose sound level exceeds the legal limit of 80 dB(A) at 3,500 rpm, the standard in force in France for roadside checks. With the baffle screwed in place, you can ride legally; removed, it releases the muffler's native sound for off-road use. On trail bikes prepared for international travel, the baffle is even more useful as legal thresholds vary by country.

It is important to check the thread diameter of the muffler outlet before purchasing a baffle separately: the most common diameters are M60x1.0, M65x1.0 and M72x1.0, but standards vary by manufacturer. Some mufflers already include a removable DB killer in their delivery kit.

Exhaust heat shields: protecting exposed areas

The exhaust heat shieldis a thermal protection that is inserted between the exhaust line and sensitive areas: tubular frame, side bodywork, travel bags, rider's leg. On motorcycles where the exhaust passes in close proximity to the rider, café racers with side upswept pipes, trail bikes with high exits, it prevents involuntary burns during stops or low-speed maneuvers.

On travel trail bikes equipped with hard or soft panniers, it is an essential protection against thermal radiation that can deform plastic materials or damage luggage fixings. Available in perforated stainless steel, cut aluminum or ceramic composites, they also provide an appreciated industrial finish touch on exposed lines.

Motorcycle exhaust FAQ

Do I need to remap the motorcycle after changing the exhaust?

It all depends on the extent of the modification. Replacing only the muffler while keeping the original catalytic converter and header rarely disrupts the fuel system enough to require reprogramming on modern motorcycles with self-adaptive injection.

However, removing the catalytic converter or replacing the entire exhaust line significantly changes the fuel parameters and can cause jerks, excessive richness or incomplete combustion. In this case, an ECU reprogramming (ECU flash) or the installation of a richness correction module is recommended to optimize performance and preserve engine longevity.

Is an aftermarket muffler road legal?

Not systematically. Some aftermarket mufflers bear a CE or E-Mark indicating their conformity to noise and pollution emission standards. Others are sold exclusively for track use or collection. Since 2020, roadside sound checks in France set the limit at 80 dB(A) at reference speed for motorcycles registered after 2016.

Approved exhausts must comply with the requirements of the Decree of April 13, 1972, relating to noise from motor vehicles, which sets admissible sound levels during motorcycle approval in accordance with European regulations.

Always check the homologation status in the product sheet before purchasing. Approved mufflers display their measured sound level in dB(A) according to the ECE R41 procedure.

How to choose between a slip-on muffler and a full system?

The slip-on muffler only replaces the muffler while keeping the original header. It improves the sound, slightly reduces weight and changes the rear aesthetic without touching the entire system, making it the fastest and most accessible solution. The full system replaces the entire system for maximum weight savings, a unified aesthetic from the flange to the outlet, and deeper optimization of gas flow.

On a travel trail bike, the full system also offers the advantage of repositioning the muffler more favorably in relation to ground clearance and luggage. If your primary goal is sound and aesthetics, the slip-on is often sufficient. If you are looking to significantly reduce weight or optimize performance, the full system is the right investment.

Can I install exhaust wrap on an original header?

Yes, without any problem. Exhaust wrap is compatible with all header materials, standard steel, stainless steel, cast iron. It adheres by friction once compressed around the tube and held by the supplied clamps.

The only precaution is to ensure that the wrap does not cover the flange gaskets or header mounting screws, in order to maintain access to these components in case of disassembly. Also avoid covering the lambda sensors, which must remain free to function correctly.

Is decat legal on the road?

No. Removing the catalytic converter is illegal on motorcycles intended for use on public roads in France and throughout the European Union. It will result in failure of the technical inspection and can be noted during a roadside check. The decats offered in our catalog are sold exclusively for track or collection use on motorcycles not registered for the road, in accordance with current regulations.
